Checking a pest controller's qualifications

Reputable pest controllers usually hold an RSPH (Royal Society for Public Health) Level 2 award in pest management or an equivalent BPCA qualification. Membership of the British Pest Control Association (BPCA) or the National Pest Technicians Association (NPTA) indicates the technician follows a code of practice and carries insurance. Because many treatments use professional rodenticides and insecticides, ask whether the operator is trained to the CRRU (Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use) standard and holds public liability cover.

Safe and responsible treatment

Any pesticide used in or around your property must be approved by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and applied in line with its label and the COSHH regulations. A responsible controller will inspect first, identify the species, and explain the treatment, risks to children and pets, and any follow-up visits before starting. For protected species such as bats or certain nesting birds, work may be restricted under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, so a competent firm will advise on the legal position rather than proceed regardless.
