Checking plant quality and guarantees

Many garden centres offer a plant guarantee, commonly covering hardy trees, shrubs and perennials for a set period if the plant fails despite correct care, so it is worth asking about the terms and keeping your receipt. Look for members of the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), whose garden centres follow trade standards and often accept the HTA National Garden Gift Card. When buying plants, check for healthy roots, firm stems and no signs of pests or disease, and ask staff whether a plant suits your soil, aspect and hardiness zone.

Peat-free compost and sustainability

The UK has moved towards ending the retail sale of peat-based compost for home gardeners, so most centres now stock peat-free and reduced-peat alternatives. If you use pesticides, weedkillers or slug controls, check that products are approved for amateur use and follow the label instructions, as UK pesticide rules are overseen by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). For larger deliveries of compost, bark or aggregates, ask about local delivery to your postcode and any minimum order or charge.
