Choosing a community centre for hire

When booking a hall for an event, check the venue's capacity, accessibility and parking, along with whether the hire fee includes use of the kitchen, tables and chairs. Ask whether the centre holds public liability insurance and, for events serving alcohol, whether it has a premises licence issued by Milton Keynes City Council under the Licensing Act 2003 or requires you to arrange a Temporary Event Notice. Many centres are run by charities registered with the Charity Commission, so their governance and safeguarding arrangements are publicly viewable.

Activities and safeguarding

Centres that host children's, youth or vulnerable adult activities should have a safeguarding policy, and staff or volunteers working with children are expected to hold DBS checks. For fitness classes, look for instructors with recognised qualifications such as CIMSPA registration or REPs membership. Food served at community cafes and events is subject to Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, which you can check before booking catering.
